Toddler Bedtime Battles: The Routine That Holds

By Baby Sleep Music

By two, most Australian toddlers have worked out that bedtime is a conversation rather than an event. The way back is not a new tactic each night — it is one sequence, run identically, until the negotiation has nothing to grip.

Rule out overtiredness first

An overtired toddler is restless, chatty and physically wired — behaviour that reads as "not ready for bed" and is in fact the opposite. Before changing anything else, move bedtime fifteen minutes earlier for a week. See overtired signs and fixes, and if naps are in transition, the 2-to-1 nap transition.

The five steps

  1. Bath and pyjamas. The physical marker that the day has ended.
  2. Milk or supper with the lights down. Overhead lights off from here on.
  3. Into the bedroom. Curtains closed, one lamp. Nothing after this happens elsewhere.
  4. One story, agreed in the hallway. Say the number before you walk in.
  5. Lamp off, the same song, goodnight. One short sentence you use every night.

Why the last step carries the routine

The song is the only step a toddler cannot argue with. There is nothing to choose, nothing to extend and no page count to negotiate — it simply starts, and it means the day is finished. Played on a loop it also covers the settle window, so the room does not fall silent the moment you leave.

A personalised lullaby with your toddler's name in it holds this position particularly well, for the same reason a personalised story does — more on that in songs with your child's name and sleep associations that help and hinder.

The getting-out-of-bed phase

Walk them back with no discussion, using the same sentence every time. No new cuddle, no drink, no plans for tomorrow. The boredom is the intervention: what keeps the pattern alive is that each trip out of bed produces something new.

Give it two weeks

Nights three and four are usually the worst, because that is when a toddler tests whether the new rules are real. Families who keep the sequence identical through that week almost always report a calmer bedtime by the second — and once it holds, it survives holidays, illness and grandparents doing bedtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has my toddler suddenly started fighting bedtime?

Usually an overtired child, an unpredictable routine, or the discovery that stalling produces attention. A fixed five-step routine addresses all three, and most families see the change inside two weeks.

How long should a toddler bedtime routine take?

About twenty minutes. Longer routines give an overtired toddler time to catch a second wind, and shorter ones skip the wind-down altogether.

Should I move bedtime later if my toddler will not sleep?

Try fifteen minutes earlier first. Most toddlers who resist bedtime are overtired rather than under-tired, and a later bedtime usually makes the resistance worse.

Does music actually help a toddler settle?

A consistent, quiet track that plays every night becomes a cue. It is the sameness that works, which is why one familiar song beats a shuffled playlist.

How many nights until a new routine sticks?

Expect three or four harder nights, then steady improvement. Two weeks of running the identical sequence is a fair test.
