Bedtime Stories vs Screens Before Bed

By Baby Sleep Music

Every Australian parent has done the maths at 6.45pm: one more episode buys twenty quiet minutes. The trouble is that the twenty minutes are borrowed, and bedtime is where you pay them back.

Two different things are happening

The first is light. Screens are bright, held close, and the light hits the eye at exactly the hour the body is trying to raise melatonin. The second, and often bigger, factor is stimulation: quick cuts, bright colour, sound effects and — with games — the child's own input driving what happens next. A story does none of this. It is one voice, one pace, and nothing to react to.

What to do if an hour is unrealistic

  • Make the cut-off a fixed time, not a fixed episode. "Screens off at six" is enforceable; "after this one" is not.
  • Put a physical step between screen and bed — bath, teeth, pyjamas — so the change of state is obvious.
  • Keep the bedroom screen-free entirely. That single rule does more than any timer.
  • Drop household lighting when the screens go off, so the whole room supports the transition.

Where audio fits

Audio is the useful middle ground. A narrated story or a lullaby gives you the calming, hands-free effect parents want from a screen without any of the light exposure — you can be tidying up or settling a sibling while the wind-down continues. It is also the version that survives a lost voice at the end of a long week.

For the music side of this, see lullabies versus white noise.

The part screens can never replace

A story at bedtime is five minutes of undivided attention from the person your child most wants it from. That is the actual mechanism — the closeness and the predictability, not the plot. No amount of well-made children's content substitutes for it, which is also why the same book night after night keeps working.

If bedtime is currently unstructured, start with the twenty-minute routine and build the screen cut-off into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before bed should screens go off?

An hour is the common recommendation for children. If that is unrealistic in your house, thirty minutes plus a consistent story routine is still a meaningful improvement.

Is a bedtime story on a tablet the same as a book?

The story is, the screen is not. Bright, close-range light and touch interaction both raise alertness. If you use a device, dim it heavily, turn off interaction, and hold it further away.

Is listening to an audio story before bed okay?

Yes. Audio has none of the light exposure problems and keeps the wind-down going with your hands free. It is the closest substitute for reading aloud.

What about screens for older siblings during bedtime?

Ambient screens in the room are a common invisible cause of late settling. Move the TV out of the wind-down space rather than trying to police attention.

Does one show before bed really matter?

For some children, no. For a sensitive or overtired child, it is often the single change that shifts bedtime by twenty minutes.
