Made-Up Bedtime Stories: How to Invent One on the Spot
Sooner or later you will be somewhere without a book — a hotel room, a grandparent's house, a night when the light is already off — and a small voice will ask for a story. Making one up is far easier than it sounds, provided you are not trying to be original.
The four-beat frame
- A familiar character. Your child, a pet, a soft toy, a possum who lives in the gum tree out the front.
- One small problem. A lost hat. A puddle in the way. A moon that will not come out.
- A gentle solution. Somebody helps. The hat is under the couch. The clouds move.
- Sleep. Everyone goes home, the lights go off, the character falls asleep.
That is the whole method. You never have to invent a plot again — only the details.
Borrow from the day
The best made-up stories are simply the day retold at half speed with one magical element added. You went to the shops, so the story goes to the shops — but the trolley talks. Children love hearing their own day reflected back, and it lets them process it while lying still.
Keep the stakes tiny
The instinct is to make it exciting. Resist it. Chases, monsters and near-misses spike arousal at exactly the wrong moment, and for some children they resurface at 2am. Keep the whole story at the emotional level of finding a missing sock. If your child already worries at night, bedtime stories for anxious children covers this in more depth.
Decide the last line first
Without a final page to stop you, a made-up story can drift for fifteen minutes. Before you start, know the sentence you will end on — the same one every night if you can. More on why in bedtime story endings that settle a child.
When you have nothing left to give
Some nights improvising is beyond you, and that is fine. This is exactly where a personalised story earns its place: the same warm, name-filled story, already written and narrated, ready to play or read without you having to think.

Create Your Child's Story ✨Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make up a bedtime story on the spot?
Use a fixed frame: a familiar character, one small problem, a gentle solution, and sleep. Fill in the details from your child's day. The structure does the work so you do not have to be creative at 7pm.
Are made-up stories better than books?
Not better, but different. Made-up stories can include your child by name and reference their real day, which holds attention well. Books are easier when you are exhausted.
What should a made-up bedtime story be about?
Something small and familiar — a lost sock, a sleepy possum, a walk to the beach. Low stakes settle; high adventure does not.
How long should a made-up story be?
Three to six minutes. Made-up stories tend to run long because there is no last page to stop you, so decide the ending before you begin.
What if I run out of ideas?
Retell the same story with one detail changed. Children ask for repetition far more often than novelty at bedtime.
