When to Start Reading to Your Baby

By Baby Sleep Music

Parents often wait for a baby to be "old enough" for books. In practice the useful starting point is much earlier than it feels, because for the first six months reading is not about the book at all.

0–3 months: your voice, not the story

A newborn cannot see much past thirty centimetres and will not follow a narrative for another year. What they can do is register the rise and fall of a familiar voice, which they have been listening to since well before birth.

Two or three minutes of anything read slowly counts — a picture book, a magazine, the label on the formula tin. If it feels silly, read one of the classic lullaby texts instead; there is a collection in classic lullabies and their lyrics.

3–6 months: high contrast and faces

Vision sharpens, and bold black-and-white or strongly coloured pages hold attention for the first time. Cloth books survive being mouthed. Keep sessions short and expect the book to end up in their mouth rather than in front of their eyes.

6–12 months: board books and pointing

This is when reading starts to look like reading. One clear image per page, a word or short sentence, and lots of naming. Around this age babies also begin to reliably recognise their own name, which is why books that use it start to land.

Bedtime is the natural home for the daily read from here on. If you have not settled on a routine yet, the twenty-minute bedtime routine shows where the story fits.

1–2 years: the age of repetition

Toddlers ask for the same book relentlessly, and they are right to. Repetition is how language is learned and how a bedtime cue is built. Do not force variety — the boredom is yours, not theirs.

2–3 years: stories they can predict

Now a real narrative works: something happens, someone solves it, everyone goes to sleep. Keep bedtime stories calm rather than exciting, and keep them short — see how long a bedtime story should be for word counts by age.

This is also the age where a personalised story earns its place. A three-year-old who is the hero of the book will sit for the whole thing on nights when nothing else holds them.

Making it stick

  • Same time each day — bedtime is the easiest to defend.
  • Keep a small stack in the bedroom so the book is never a trip to another room.
  • Read slower than feels natural. Almost everyone reads too fast at bedtime.
  • Let them turn the pages, even out of order.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start reading to my baby?

From birth. A newborn cannot follow a story, but they can hear rhythm, pitch and your voice — which is most of what early reading gives them.

Do newborns get anything out of books?

They get your voice at a slow, steady pace and close physical contact. That is why reading counts as a wind-down step long before it counts as literacy.

What kind of books suit each age?

High-contrast and cloth books for newborns, sturdy board books with one image per page from six months, simple repeated stories from one year, and short narrative picture books from two.

How often should I read to a baby?

Daily is the goal, and bedtime is the easiest slot to protect. Ten minutes a day at a predictable time beats a long session once a week.

My baby chews the book and will not sit still. Is it working?

Yes. Mouthing and grabbing is how babies engage with books. Keep reading around it — attention span grows on its own.
