Tiny fluffy lamb in a daisy meadow at pink dawn, illustrated children book style — Mary Had a Little Lamb

Mary Had a Little Lamb: Lyrics, History and the True Story Behind It

By Baby Sleep Music

Mary Had a Little Lamb is a true story, the first words ever recorded in human history, and — when you slow it down — a beautiful settle song.

Here are all six verses (most parents only know three), the real 1815 story, and how to turn the nursery rhyme into a working lullaby.

All six verses

Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow;
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.

It followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rule;
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about
Till Mary did appear.

"Why does the lamb love Mary so?"
The eager children cry;
"Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know,"
The teacher did reply.

"And you each gentle animal
In confidence may bind,
And make them follow at your call,
If you are always kind."

The true story

In 1815, a girl named Mary Sawyer in Sterling, Massachusetts, was given a sickly newborn lamb by her father. She nursed it back to health and it followed her everywhere — including, one day, to the Redstone Schoolhouse.

A teenage visitor named John Roulstone watched the scene, wrote the first three verses on a scrap of paper, and gave them to Mary the next day. Fifteen years later, the American writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale added the final three verses and published the complete poem in 1830.

The first words ever recorded

On December 6, 1877, Thomas Edison shouted the first verse of Mary Had a Little Lamb into his newly invented tinfoil cylinder phonograph. When he played it back, it was the first time in human history that a recorded human voice had been heard. The recording survives in the Smithsonian.

Why the melody works as a settle song

Mary Had a Little Lamb is built almost entirely on three notes — mi, re, do. That makes it pentatonic, predictable, and easy for babies to recognise after just a few repeats. Slow it to 70 BPM and it works exactly like any other classic baby sleep music.

How to use it tonight

  1. Sing verse 1 only at bedtime — repeat 4–6 times.
  2. Drop tempo to a slow walking pace.
  3. Whisper-sing the final repetition.
  4. Save verses 2–6 for daytime — bedtime is for repetition, not story.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the full lyrics to Mary Had a Little Lamb?

The original 1830 poem by Sarah Josepha Hale has six verses. The first three are the ones every parent knows; the last three explain why the lamb loved Mary so dearly. All six are below.

Is Mary Had a Little Lamb based on a true story?

Yes. The Mary in the poem was Mary Sawyer, a real girl from Sterling, Massachusetts, who in 1815 took her pet lamb to school. A young visitor named John Roulstone wrote the first three verses about the incident. Sarah Josepha Hale published the full version in 1830.

Why is Mary Had a Little Lamb famous beyond being a nursery rhyme?

It was the first words ever recorded — Thomas Edison recited the first verse into his tinfoil cylinder phonograph in 1877, the first audio recording in human history.

Is it really a lullaby?

Originally no — it's a nursery rhyme. But slowed down to roughly 70 BPM and sung softly, the gentle pentatonic melody settles babies just as well as any classic cradle song.

Why does the simple melody work?

It uses only three notes for most of the song. Predictability and minimal melodic movement is what calms a baby's nervous system; you can't get much more predictable than three notes.
